Artist's Comments

I spent almost two weeks deciding what animal I would like to use for this project. My initial reaction was to use an Africanized Honey Bee. Then my second favorite was various breeds of praying mantis. Thirdly, I considered making a bat one of the main elements of this work.

I did pages full of sketches and studies for each of these animals and insects, before finally deciding that the snake gave me the most to work with in fluid, solid shapes and space. I did my first study, the one in the lower righthand corner in a little over two hours. My second study, done with torn paper in the upper lefthand corner, took well over three to four from start to finish. The remaining snake was a mixture of the two techniques, and took so long I didn't bother timing it. Sufficent to say I started when the sun was high in the sky and finished well after most healthy people head to bed.

The words were notes I jotted after I finished all three studies and was trying to decide what sort of mood I would be going for in the final piece.

Don't know what it is (can't pinpoint it), but I really like this one. Its just a rough, brainstorm(?).

The one that I like the most is the one that looks like calligraphy, the first one you did.

But anyway, just the way you put the notes and each of the studies is so... disorderly organized. (If I may.)

Good stuff.

Really great, Lee.

I don't know if I mentioned how much I like the first one you did when you were showing me, but I do.

The other two are really awesome, and the awe inspiring amount of effort is apparent . . . but the first one has so much elegant simplicity.
And the snake looks really contemplative, too. That could have something to do with it.

You only left that sort of comment because the first commenter did. XD You're usual comments are like 'Yay :D'

Thanks so much! I'm feeling a little more confident about showing this Wednesday to the class. I mean, I know I liked it, but sometimes my tastes are sort of out in left field.

I know what you mean. The stuff that I do is sometimes so out there that its hard to find someone to appreciate it. But then again I try to do every type of art.

Things should work out for you. Tell me how it goes, I'm interested.

that's not true D:

Okay, so those are my usual comments . . . but this one wasn't because of the other commenter.

It was because this was a massive art project that you spent like 12 hours on that you did on gigantic paper.

Besides, "Snakes yay!" would be really stupid.
Not like "Sexay Will yay! :D"

Yeah . . .

OKay, so, sexy snake to the right, awesome powerful looking snake to the left, and a kool snake profile shot at the top! NOT ONLY did you spend 16-18 hours on these snakes, you researched for days, did preliminary drawings. If anyone dislikes your snakes, they deserve to be placed infront of a lee Gestapo! XD

I love all three lee! <3

YAY ME!

That looks so NEAT. Especially the snake on the upper left--it looks more like watercolor than torn pieces of paper. The effect is MONDO elegant, which, of course, is a trait all snakes share. <3

I think the mantis woulda looked neat--but I'm glad you decided to settle with the snake. It's wonderful. :3

I might still do a mantis when I have more freetime. I really liked working with the cut paper. It forced me to compromise more than I usually would have.
